  • The Southampton Boat Show is one of Europe’s largest on-water boat shows
  • The Southampton Boat Show boasts one of the world’s largest purpose built show marinas with over 2.5km of pontoons and over 380 boats afloat
  • 2006 will be the 38th Southampton Boat Show
  • The Southampton Boat Show now covers over 155,000m.. of land
  • The Southampton Boat Show covers one mile of Southampton’s coastline
  • The spectacular on-water Boat Show costs over £3 million to stage
  • The Southampton Boat Show has over 600 exhibitors and approximately 1,000 boats on display
  • The biggest boat at the Southampton Boat Show this year is the Azimut Leonardo 98

  • Every February, the sand is reclaimed from below the water level and used to replenish and level the beach
  • Weymouth has had a resident sand sculptor for several generations; the sand is the finest in the world for sand sculpture. The current sand sculptor, Mark Anderson, has had his work displayed all over the world – including in the shop window of Selfridges
  • World class players have travelled from as far as Hawaii to compete in Weymouth’s annual Beach Volleyball Championships
  • In the late 1700s, King George III spent 17 summers holidaying in Weymouth with the Royal Family. More recently the Queen’s horses took to the beach for an early morning gallop
  • In 2004 Weymouth Beach was used to represent the Palestine desert for Channel 4’s documentary series Days that Shook the World
  • Weymouth sand is kept soft and safe, it is cleaned and raked every day during the main holiday season Famous faces

  • The count down to the Southampton Boat Show was officially kicked off by TV presenter Ben Fogle on 4 August

  • As well as Ben Fogle, fellow TV presenter Steve Leonard will also attend the Show
  • Celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli will be preparing a brand new menu of vibrant nautical recipes and appearing at the Show
  • The Southampton Boat Show will play host to some of the UK’s most accomplished sailors such as Alex Thomson and Dee Caffari
  • In 2000, Alex Thomson won the Round Britain & Ireland Race on an Open 50 "Sail that Dream"
  • Dee Caffari is the first woman to sail single-handed, non-stop, around the world against prevailing winds and currents
  • The current Miss Southampton Boat Show, Sophie Diamond, will hand over her crown to the 2006 winner on Saturday 23 September The UK and water

  • There are 54 major rivers in England Scotland and Wales combined
  • Great Britain’s mainland coastline is 11,073 miles long (17820 km)
  • The Furthest point from the sea is the village of cotton in the Elms, which is 70 miles (113 km) away
